Amazing book!
Within the present day of broken family environments and uncontextualized school experience, this book brings some much needed balance.
Phenomenal spiritual and social guide which I highly recommend it, especially to parents and teenagers.
I teach a university course on Male Identity Development, and use this as requried reading. It is the best, and most balanced overview I have found regarding the social science of men and masculinity. It does not take a "male bashing" perspective, nor is it defensively pro-male. Rather, it looks at masculine development from a number of perspectives. So many other books on men seem to have an "axe to grind", but this tries to stay objective. My students also find it to be quite readable. I look forward to a 3rd edition.
After having read this book for a psychology class at my university, I can say that Kilmartin provides an intriguing look at the male psyche. Kilmartin provides a subtle critique of the male gender and all the stereotypes surrounding it to present a manual for understanding masculinity as a construction that comes from our culture, biology, and society. His view is balanced as he points out both pros and cons of the modern definition of masculinity. Furthermore, the book delves into how various psychological theories are applicable to understanding the modern man. The Masculine self-does not limit itself to men’s studies, rather it explores masculinity under the term of gender studies.
While this book contains interesting statistics and arguments, the writing and lack of basic editing are huge obstacles to comprehension and enjoyment. A book in its fourth edition -- and at this price! -- shouldn't be this messy.
I enjoyed this book and I received it when I needed it. It opened my eyes to a broader perspective and I learned a lot about makes and females in society. I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to read it)
