While there are many excellent books that help the rider to address the technical goals of dressage, Ride from the Heart can transform the way in which the reader communicates with his horse. Rider and trainer Jenny Rolfe has written this book to share the experiences she gained in Portugal, a country with a long and spiritual history of classical training. For many years Jenny has been writing articles about classical horsemanship and her innovative techniques - particularly communication through breathing - which aim for ultimate lightness and empathy in riding have been met with much interest. Through techniques used in loose work, work in-hand and under saddle, the reader will be on the way to enhancing a sense of 'feel', which in turn will encourage oneness and a spirit of dance between horse and rider. The book underlines throughout, the importance of maintaining a bond of leadership, respect and friendship with our horse and within the pages are important tools for achieving these goals. Wherever you are within your level of training, this book will help to enhance and enrich your relationship with your horse so that art may be formed through love.

This is a really excellent book. At a time when riding had become overly technical and driven for me, I wanted help returning to the heart of the matter - my love for horses. This book's title drew me in. I found the idea of breathing to aid the horse to be a break-through in my own riding. I have a tendency to forget to breathe in rhythm when riding but rather to somewhat hold my breath and hold tension there as well. Remembering to breathe was helpful enough but the idea of breathing in to half halt was SO much more effective and gentle that my previous attempts at half halting involving way too much strength and hands. And I also have found the idea of breathing out to signal an up transition useful as well, especially in the canter transition. This book inspired me to be always sympathetic to my horse and taught me to be more subtle and yet more effective in my aids. While it's not a how-to book, it is full of classical training and helpful suggestions and is a must read for other adult amateurs struggling to become adept dressage riders and to get past Training level!Product details

Ride from the Heart The Art of Communication Between Horse and Rider Jenny Rolfe 9780956367808 Books Reviews
As an avid reader and collector of books on classical riding and natural horsemanship, I have found a new mentor in Jenny Rolfe. She has effectively brought these two worlds together in a manner that is so easy to understand, enjoyable to read and worthy of a second and third study. I fell in love with her stallion Delfin and his magical story. The book is filled with gorgeous photos of Purebred Spanish Horses. She has managed to be classical without being "dry", natural without being "trendy", and spiritual without being too "out there". Her book has moved to my top 5 of all time. I am calling her a "natural classicist"!
As with every book I buy, there are bits I learn and find useful in this book. Unfortunately, large parts of it really drag and I haven't found there to be much outside of the concept of breathing as a training tool to catch my attention. The photos are beautiful though and the author's life experiences with horses are certainly interesting to read about.
I had high hopes for this book, but didn't get anything from it. It was a lot of personal philosophy with little practical information to back it up. The only thing I got from it is the use of the rider's breathing to initiate things, but I'd already learned that from another book, James Shaw's RIDE FROM WITHIN, a text about Tai Chi for the equestrian. Of the two books, Shaw's book offered much more.
This is a great book for anyone that enjoys riding. It was very easy and fun to read and understand. I would think that any intermediate rider would benefit from reading it. I don't do dressage but there were a lot of things that helped me in just my everyday riding. The pictures and illustrations were great. I would recommend this for any person the wants to be a better rider and horse person.
I got this tape to help my husband who is new at riding get a better seat.It is for me an advanced dressage rider quite interesting, and of use in breathing , a bit of Centered Riding a bit yoga it has a number of uses from using ones core to comunicating with the horse.I only gave it 4 stars as it could be organized better in the format.
